So, you've got the film making bug. If you are really serious about going into the movie biz, do it right. It really is a tough biz and the more training and more contacts you can make, the better your chances are of making it.

A top film school is just the place to do both: Learn the craft and make contacts.

Here is a list of some of the top film schools in  the country. You wil notice that it is not always necessary to go to a proper, 4 year university:

American Film Institute (AFI) - This is one of the great and most prestigious film schools. It is located in Los Angeles and has some of the best and most famous instructors. This place is top notch, but don't let that deter you.

California Institute of the Arts - Another Los Angeles staple. This art school is located just north of the city and has a really good reputation.

UCLA - You've probably heard of it and it boast a ton of famous alumni. You can't go wrong here.

Columbia University - Very famous film school on the Upper West side of New York City.

New York University (NYU) - Always considered one of the top schools in the country, especially on the east coast. Located in Greenwich Village, if you can get into NYU, you will be getting one of the best film educations from a University.

Northwestern University - Another great option if you want to stay in the Midwest.

USC - Located near downtown Los Angeles, USC has one of the best reputations as far as film schools go. The film school is legendary. George Lucas, an alumni, has buildings named after him....enough said.

Now, there are other good schools in other states and different parts of the country. Check your local universities or check some of the other pages on this website.

The main thing is to get started.

In fact, here's a little tip:

It maybe a good idea to take some classes locally first before you jump into one of the big boys. You will:

  • Make sure that it is something you want to pursue
  • Get some experience. Some of these places are hard to get into

If you don't live in one of these high performing arts college areas, check your local school. Most likely they have a film program of some sort and it will be a lot easier to get into than the ones in New York

The best film schools in the world are in Los angeles or New York. If you are serious and you can get into one of them, go. But don't think that you need it. There are many ways to make a film these days

It doesn't matter, really. Cary Grant never went to film school. He join a comedy troupe. The troupe enabled him to learn many skills like pantomime and acrobatics. Not really acting is it
